Chamber Chimes

July 27, 2011

We have been so pleased with the turnout of shoppers for the Watonga Farm & Garden Market held every Saturday morning at the Armory.  Our vendors have consistently provided quality products including vegetables of all kinds, hormone free eggs, fruits and peanut brittle, to name a few.  It has brought a great outpouring of buyers too, with it becoming a fun Saturday morning visiting routine as well as a shopping experience!  Alas, following this Saturday's (7/30) Market, we will close for the month of August due to the effect the extreme heat has had on the growing season.  So be sure to come out this Saturday to get your produce and goodies, then keep us on your radar for September as we plan to reopen the Saturday of Labor Day Weekend and every Saturday of that month.

Recently, your Chamber had the opportunity to host members of Red Carpet County Tourism Board at Roman Nose Lodge for their bi-monthly meeting. Red Carpet Country is one of 6 “countries” designated by the Oklahoma Department of Tourism and encompasses most of Northwestern Oklahoma.  Their mission is to promote tourism to our area by potential visitors from all across the US and beyond. They publish 2 annual tourism pieces, the Red Carpet Country Visitors Guide and the Red Carpet Country Events Guide and make them available through travelok.com and at travel shows throughout the Oklahoma/Kansas/Texas region.  We arranged a tour of the new facilities by park manager, Travis Lindley and Board Members enjoyed a wonderful lunch and great service by the Lodge staff.  We received many positive comments from the board members as to their impression of the new look of the Lodge, as well as the lunch and meeting accommodations.  These Board Members are all involved in some way with tourism and come from all over Northwestern Oklahoma.  We appreciate all the staff at the lodge who showed these folks what a great jewel we have in our community!

Over the summer we have received many calls for information from visitors coming to the Watonga area.  We have heard from families holding reunions at Roman Nose or in town, individuals visiting family or doing some camping, and a business who normally holds a retreat at Roman Nose but this year will be doing it at a City facility in town.   You may not realize it but Watonga is a destination point for a lot of people from around the state and beyond and we are lucky to have so many nice facilities (motels, parks, city buildings, etc.) to house them.  Their tourism dollars can make a big difference in our tax base and we welcome them to share with us anytime!

As we continue our partnership with Devon Energy to recognize area volunteers, we would like to congratulate Jennifer Gauer as recipient for July Volunteer of the Month.  Jennifer was nominated for her work in organizing the Watonga Schools Library book drive this past year, for spearheading the parent volunteer program at the schools and her many other efforts through the schools, Kiwanis and elsewhere.  Keep those nominations coming so we can offer recognition for all the great work being done in our community!
