Chamber Chimes

Busness of the Year 2009 - Clewell's Family Hardware

The rescheduled Watonga Chamber Banquet was a wonderful evening, attended by about 185 people.  I am so appreciative of everyone who rearranged their schedule to attend or do their part for the banquet.  The decorations done by area businesses and civic organizations made for a beautiful and conversation inspiring room and all the speakers did a fine job.  Oklahoma City Mayor Mick Cornett spoke on his ties

to our area, his journey to becoming OKC Mayor and some of the experiences of his time in that position.  End O’ Main provided a generous and tasty meal, as always, and was so helpful in working with us.  It was also nice to honor all the deserving recipients of this year’s achievement awards.

Less than 2 weeks away is the Watonga Trout Derby, running from March 5th through 7th.  This event brings anglers and families from all over the state to Roman Nose State Park and Watonga.  Last year’s registration was a record 328 and we hope to do that well again this year.  We will again give away a Bass Brat Boat, sponsored by Dobrinski Chevrolet and Irwin Auto Co., to one lucky registrant.  In addition we have a 2 night stay at the Oklahoma State Park of your choice, the winner of which will also be drawn from registrations.  Add to that many prizes donated by area businesses and the cash prizes available in several competitive categories and there is plenty of opportunity for fun.  Pre-registration is now available online at www.watongachamber.com or from a Chamber Board member or in the Chamber office.  Or you are welcome to join us at 7:00am on March 5th at the General Store and register there.  The advantage to that last option is that there will be cinnamon rolls and coffee for sale then!

The US Census questionnaires are arriving in our area now and I strongly urge you to fill it out and send it in right away.  If you misplace it or otherwise do not respond within approximately 2 weeks, that is when you will have a census taker come knocking.  Whether on the form or in person, please make sure you are counted.  An inaccurate count can affect any state or federal funding that is distributed to us for at least the next 10 years so it is absolutely crucial that we give as accurate a count as possible.  If you have any questions about the census, what it affects or what to expect, please visit 2010census.gov to learn more or stop in the Chamber office and look over the literature that I have available.  Let’s do our best to make sure we are well represented!
