Chamber Chimes

  June 17, 2009

Last week was the dedication of the new, handicapped accessible cabin at Roman Nose State Park. It was well attended by park, tourism and local officials, including Jerri Askins and Hardy Watkins.  This is the second cabin of this type built in Oklahoma by members of the Thunderbird Council Pioneers, both designed specifically with wheelchair access in mind.  It will offer a greater opportunity for people who are physically challenged to come enjoy the beauty of Roman Nose State Park and is a added resource for our community.  Hardy Watkins will return to Watonga on Tuesday June 23rd for another Town Hall meeting to discuss the status of the Roman Nose Lodge work.  It will be held at Watonga City Hall at 2:30.

This Saturday, June 20th is the Town Wide garage sale.  If you want to have your sale added to the list, please contact the chamber office at 623-5452 no later than 4:00 Thursday.  It will be added to the list and map that will be distributed at convenience stores and the Armory on the day of the sale.  This has been advertised in many surrounding cities so it should bring a lot of people out shopping.  The fee to be listed on the Chamber’s list is $5.00.

Just around the corner is 4th of July and I’m sure it is going to be another nice celebration.  As in years past, the American Legion will be offering hamburgers and hot dogs, as well as entertainment for the whole family.  This is always a lot of fun and will be held at Martz Park from 10:30 to 1:30.  Be watching for more information on this in the coming weeks and if you would like to offer any help or have questions, please contact Jerry Benson, post commander.

There is a lot going on in Watonga this summer, so if you are ever lacking for something to do, just ask around.  It is a great time to pull the family together and enjoy all the events and parks this community has to offer.

June 3, 2009

I hope everyone had a great Memorial Day weekend and enjoyed the nice weather we were blessed with.  Bob Shoemaker and “the gang” from Watonga Main Street did a great job on Pioneer Days.  There were lots of entries in the parade and it looked like everyone was having fun.  I attended the bed races this year for the first time and it too was fun to watch, especially since I wasn’t pushing a bed!  Thanks to everyone who pitched in to push the Chamber of Commerce bed in the parade and race.  They were A.J. Brewer, Dillon Nelson, Zac Goerke, Bronc Bryant, Rick Larson, and Savannah Daukai (as rider).  I appreciated the help and Bob appreciated the entries.

It is a very busy time of year for everyone with the kids out of school, vacations, family reunions, and all the events that go on during summer time.  The library is starting its summer program next week, with special guests on Mondays at 2:00, a preschool program on Tuesdays, a teen program on Wednesday and story times on Thursdays.  The ladies at the library put together a great program that I am sure any children in your life would enjoy.  This Sunday is the Roman Nose Mountain Bike Festival, one of 11 events in the Oklahoma State MTB Championship Race Series.  It runs from about 9:00 to noon and starts at the General Store.  The following Sunday (the 14th) will be the Texas 4000 for Cancer stop over and dinner at the Watonga Christian Church.  The community is invited to join the riders for a hamburger dinner as they show a short presentation about their 4000 mile ride.  Dinner is at 6:00 and donations will be accepted to go toward MD Anderson Cancer Centers.  Then, on Saturday the 20th, we will have the Town Wide Garage Sale.  If you would like to have a sale on that day, you can register with the Chamber office for $5.00 and we will add your address to the map for distribution.  Also, starting as soon as the produce cooperates, the Farmer’s Market will be starting.  It will be held on Saturday mornings in front of Watonga Motel.  I would love to hear from any gardeners as to when they think they will be ready.

So enjoy this time of year.  The weather is beautiful and there is no end to entertaining possibilities!
