The rescheduled Watonga Chamber Banquet
was a wonderful evening, attended by
about 185 people.
I am so appreciative of everyone
who rearranged their schedule to attend
or do their part for the banquet.
The decorations done by area
businesses and civic organizations made
for a beautiful and conversation
inspiring room and all the speakers did
a fine job.
Oklahoma City Mayor Mick Cornett
spoke on his ties
|
to our area, his
journey to becoming OKC Mayor and some
of the experiences of his time in that
position.
End O’ Main
provided a generous and tasty meal, as
always, and was so helpful in working
with us.
It was also nice to honor all the
deserving recipients of this year’s
achievement awards.
Less than 2 weeks away is the Watonga
Trout Derby, running from March 5th
through 7th.
This event brings anglers and
families from all over the state to Roman
Nose
State Park and Watonga.
Last year’s registration was a
record 328 and we hope to do that well
again this year.
We will again give away a Bass
Brat Boat, sponsored by Dobrinski
Chevrolet and Irwin Auto Co., to one
lucky registrant.
In addition we have a 2 night
stay at the
Oklahoma
State Park of your choice,
the winner of which will also be drawn
from registrations.
Add to that many prizes donated
by area businesses and the cash prizes
available in several competitive
categories and there is plenty of
opportunity for fun.
Pre-registration is now available
online at
www.watongachamber.com or from a
Chamber Board member or in the Chamber
office.
Or you are welcome to join us at
7:00am on March 5th at the
General Store and register there.
The advantage to that last option
is that there will be cinnamon rolls and
coffee for sale then!
The US Census questionnaires are
arriving in our area now and I strongly
urge you to fill it out and send it in
right away.
If you misplace it or otherwise
do not respond within approximately 2
weeks, that is when you will have a
census taker come knocking.
Whether on the form or in person,
please make sure you are counted.
An inaccurate count can affect
any state or federal funding that is
distributed to us for at least the next
10 years so it is absolutely crucial
that we give as accurate a count as
possible.
If you have any questions about
the census, what it affects or what to
expect, please visit 2010census.gov to
learn more or stop in the Chamber office
and look over the literature that I have
available.
Let’s do our best to make sure we
are well represented!

As you are likely aware, we have had to
postpone the Chamber Banquet due to the
weather.
When the storm came in Monday
morning, we had about a one hour window
in which we could decide to proceed or
delay.
We knew that rescheduling it
would create some challenges, but our
primary concern was to encourage
everyone to be safe.
Freezing temperatures after that
snow could have easily developed into
slick and dangerous roads for anyone
coming to or leaving the banquet and the
last thing we want is to see
|
someone get hurt.
So we have rescheduled the Annual
Watonga Chamber of Commerce Banquet for
next Monday, February 15th,
6:00 p.m. at the Watonga Christian
Church.
Mayor Mick Cornett has been
gracious enough to reschedule us and
will still be our speaker.
I know many people are very much
looking forward to hearing him speak and
his willingness to switch dates made our
decision much easier.
We hope to see many of you there.
Plans for the Trout Derby are
revving up, as it is only three and a
half weeks away.
We will once again give away a
Bass Boat to one lucky registrant, as
well as a 2 night Stay & Play package at
your choice of
Oklahoma
State Parks, and many
other nice prizes.
Anglers have the chance to win
cash and prizes based on their catches,
while enjoying the beautiful scenery of
Roman Nose State Park and the great
American past time of fishing.
Registration is $20 for anyone 18
years and older, $10 for those 17 and
under.
Stocking of
Lake Watonga has been taking place since late October and
will occur again just before the
Derby, so there
may be some good fishing to be had.
This is a joint venture with
Friends of Roman Nose State Park, an
organization that raises money for
special projects out at the park.
Roman Nose is very fortunate to
have a support group like this
organization as it helps them get
projects done that may otherwise never
work their way high enough on the
priority list to get completed.
If you enjoy this State Park and
would like to be involved, please join
the Friends of Roman Nose group for a
meeting on Thursday, February 11th
at 5:00 at the group campground.
Renewed interest is needed to
keep this important entity functioning
and supporting our own Roman Nose State
Park.
