Chamber Chimes

April 20, 2011

How nice it is to see so many new businesses and business owners in Watonga!  Welcome back to Lyn Pavlicek and her mother who are returning to Main Street with their new venture, Miss Emma's Attic.  New in business is Melissa Giles, owner of Opulenza (formerly Temptations) who has plans to not only retain the gift items, but to add a coffee shop, too.  Atlas Fitness is just about ready to open, with remodeling currently

being done at the former C&A fitness location on Clarence Nash.  Opening should be by May 1st.  That's great news, especially since the Sweet Shop's delicious donut tradition is being carried on by Gaylene Harvey, following Ruth Trumbley's retirement!  Sounds like a well planned morning:  Get a donut at the Sweet Shop, some coffee at Opulenza, let it settle over some shopping at Miss Emma's Attic, then work off the guilt at Atlas Fitness!

Now I know that you have already heard of all these business openings and changes but I want to make a point.  These individuals have, by stepping into these businesses, shared with us a huge vote of confidence in Watonga.  They would not choose business ownership in Watonga if they did not believe that Watonga is worthy of their efforts and has the potential to support their businesses.  If they can offer us that kind of support, we owe it to them to stop in their locations and give them the first chance to earn some of our spending money.  We all want to have local shopping options, but we can't expect them to stay around if we don't give them the chance they have given Watonga.

Once again the talented members of Watonga Community Theatre have wrapped up another great stage presentation.  Nancy Hursh directed her clever troop or actors and actresses to provide fun, family friendly amusement right here on our own Main Street.  Kudos to all those involved in bringing this level of entertainment to our community.

The Friends of Roman Nose State Park cleanup is planned for this Saturday, April 23rd from 9:00am - noon.  Everyone is welcome to join them at the pool parking area where they will be assigned an area to clear of trash.  Bags and water are provided and participants are reminded that they may want to wear sunscreen and bug repellant.  This is a Keep Oklahoma Beautiful event and follows Earth Day, so come out and help keep our little corner of the world beautiful.

Once again, Watonga has had the opportunity to show what great people we have in our community.  Our most recent tour group consisted of 50 people from Assembly of God Church in south Oklahoma City.  There was a wide range of ages represented and all appeared to enjoy their visit.  The Kitchen Band entertained while the ladies of the Senior Center served a delicious lunch, then Weldon Poarch showed them the Chapel and Mary Dean opened the Ferguson Home for them.  They were given lots of information about our stores and attractions in town, so we hope to see them back another time.

The Watonga Middle and High School Libraries book drive wraps up this Friday, so if you have been clearing your shelves, be sure to get in touch with Mrs. Bordelon by then. She can be reached at 623-7361.  To further benefit the libraries, plan to attend the book sale on April 16th, 9am - 4pm, at the Middle School gym where all proceeds will go towards purchasing new books for the school libraries.

Plans have begun for the Town Wide Garage Sale which will be held on June 4th.  It sounds like a long time away but it will be here before you know so start thinking about whether you want to have a garage sale yourself or just enjoy the shopping opportunities.  Registering your sale with the Chamber for $5 will place it on the map that will be distributed at all Watonga Convenience Stores.  We also advertise all over Northwestern Oklahoma, so that is a pretty big bang for your buck!

Friends of Roman Nose State Park are planning a park cleanup in conjunction with Keep Oklahoma Beautiful and Earth Day.  Saturday, April 23rd, members, civic organizations, scouts and interested individuals are asked to meet at the parking area by the pool between 8:30 and 9:00am.  Groups will be assigned designated areas and the cleanup will last from 9:00 to noon.  Trash bags and water will be provided; you may want to bring heavy work gloves and sunscreen/bug repellent if you have the.  Any help would be appreciated as we work together to remove debris and keep our park looking beautiful.
